All of you need to make it to a mecca. Burning man or a national rainbow gathering. It's more than you think., Not a bunch of hippies out in the woods.. You'll leave a changed person, seriously. It's a creation of sacred ground. The second wave. The result of success. Right now I'm talking about home, and everyone has their thoughts about what they look at. It's very very different to speak -from- home. HOME motherfuckers... Hello my beloved orphans..... Like tugging on a wormhole...

    Well said FreedomFighter!

The power should truly lie with the people and not the government. The job of the government should be to protect the people. However our government has gone away from that. Instead they only protect the corporations. What we really need to do is spend this money on things that help to empower the poor of this country. The great thing about the USA is that if you really want to change your life you can. It just takes motivation, hard work and fiscal responsibility. You have to be willing to put in the time to get the results you want.

i'm talkin about equally proportional taxation. i don't think it's fair that i make around $10,000 and have to pay roughly 15% in taxes when someone that makes $100,000 only has to pay 8%. granted, their chunk is bigger, but proportionately, it's smaller. when i pay that 15%, it means i'm struggling to pay my electricity every month. when they pay that 8%, it means they can't take their 3rd trip to hawaii this year. i've never even been to hawaii.
people keep having more babies, so the cost of education is rising, but no one wants to pay for it. so they cut schools and then kids in 2nd grade have to compete with 60 other kids for their teacher's attention.
i understand the apprehension of giving the government more money since they seem to spend it so frivolously, and the people only see the results in the form of war mongering.
while our infrastructure crumbles because they don't know how to divvy out the funds appropriately, they sit on capital hill smoking their cuban cigars, and drinking fine wines, while their kids go to private schools where they get the attention they need. the cycle has to end sometime, right?
to make a long story short, i don't have a problem with taxation, as long as it's equal the whole way up the pay scale, and as long as education and other infrastructure issues are addressed. i'm sick of my 15% going to bullets that i wouldn't use. i'm sick of my 15% paying for vacations, when i haven't had a day off in the last 2 months, let alone time enough for a vacation. and i'm sick of paying higher tuition for the same education i got the year previous. i'm sick of my niece being shuttled from school district to school district. how can they expect her to learn times tables when she doesn't even know the names of half the kids in her own class?

    something's gotta give.

dissenter- i agree! Burn the monetary system :-)

lozz- the problem with socialism is that the only way it can be implemented is through coercion and force. People want to be free to make a living. There is never a point where, after you've started making a certain amount of money, it is worth it for you to start giving away 75% or 85% of what you've been working so hard for. If you're not allowed to reward yourself for working hard, you WON'T WORK HARD. That's why the USSR (Union of Soviet Socialist Republics) fell apart in the '80. People stopped working, except just what was required for them to get by, because there was no reward in working harder than your neighbor. So the USSR economy collapsed. The other problem was that it was impossible to keep people from trying to get around the excessive taxes and regulations without excessive government force, i.e. FASCISM.

I don't believe that capitalism brought about this economic slump (which is really all that it is). It was excessive government intervention that caused things to come to a screeching hault. FOR EXAMPLE, without the Federal Reserve Bank controlling interest rates, and the Federal government making laws that forced banks to lend to jobless and poor people so that they could buy houses they couldn't afford, there would not have been a housing bubble. And if there was no bubble the bubble wouldn't have "popped," bringing the real-estate market crashing down, which, in turn, sent the rest of the economy south. Without that government intrusion into private and corporate affairs, a one-bedroom house would have never sold for $400,000, because real-estate investors would not have had all of the reasons they had to buy the inflated houses, and banks wouldn't have made Stated-Income loans and Adjustable Rate Mortgages for those expensive houses to people making less than 30 or 40 grand per year. Legislation, regulation, and goofy laws designed to get people into homes they couldn't afford made it all happen.

That's not to say that there aren't greedy people who take advantage of the poor if they are allowed to. Business is like this: if you want to rent a store front (where i live) and you are a corporation, your lease per month will be about $4,000. You can afford that if you're a giant corporation and you're in the big money. But if you are a sole-proprietor or a family-owned business, your lease price will be about $10,000 per month. You couldn't stay in business paying a lease like that unless you are awefully good at what you do! Large corporations get together and SCREW the little guys so that they can't compete with the corporations. THAT'S GREED. But your socialist Obama government doesn't care, because THEY MAKE MOST OF THEIR TAX MONEY FROM THOSE LARGE CORPORATIONS, not the small family businesses. That's how the GRADUATED INCOME TAX (from the Communist Manifesto) works. Government makes more profit, which is necessary for running a socailist government, from the large corporations, so it is in the best interest of a socialist government to keep the corporations huge and powerful and greedy and ignore the little people. That's just part of the corruption that is inherent in socialism. Whereas through laizez faire (sp?) capitalism, the poor are allowed by government the same opportunity to succeed as the rich.

Its funny how Americans use the word Socialism in such a negative way. Socialism is a positive ideology, its an alternative to capitalism where profit is the priority and money is made for the few by exploiting the majority. By nationalising industry there is no incentive for profit, therefore the workers gain a fair income for their work. It also means that the industry cannot participate in activities which are damaging to society in general.

Socialism works. It does not neccesarily mean an authoritarian government such as under the soviet union, people can have complete individual freedom from the state.

Capitalism and globalisation are the key factors in the global economy meltdown, they have completely fucked us over, but people are still preaching to the neo-liberal handbook. Think about it, the people who caused this crisis are fine, its the workers who take the brunt of it though.
Bring back the 96% tax rate on over £1 million and bury Thatcher alive.
    goodnight.

no doubt its two sides to the same coin, trying to get Obama to fix any mess, is like trying to get the cashier at Burger King to fix your burger that they fukked up. any family that makes over 250,000 per year shouldnt be struggling, maybe they should learn to budget their finances a little better, or quit buying PS3's and w/e crap they think the kids need. i know families with a combined income of less then 100,000 that do very well. Bottom line, money is useless and the whole monetary system needs to be destroyed.

The idea of "having nothing" is gradually becoming more and more attractive to me. The less you have, the less you have to lose. And there really is some peace in living free like an animal. Your only worries are food, water and shelter. (And maybe getting laid. That wouldn't be so easy.) As government cracks down on people who work harder than the rest of us and make more money than us, it makes me feel less inclined to work harder and make more money. Do i really want to work 16 hours a day and have half of my money stolen from me by the government to pay for "business" cruises to Hawaii for politicians and bureaucrats? Not really. I'd rather work half as many hours and make half as much money.

That "top 2%" btw is the top 2% of people who are responsible for giving the rest of us (who are not self-employed) jobs. I KNOW that increasing the taxes that employers/producers pay will decrease the number of people that they are willing or able to hire. At least, it decreases the amount of pay-raise we will be able to get out of them. And it decreases the amount of money they are willing to pay for the goods and services that we at the "bottom" offer them. I make my money by offering services to people who are in that "top 2%." Without them handing over some of their money to me, i can't make a living. I'm an entertainer and an artist. Poor people don't support me financially.

The most destructive thing we could do for our economy right now is RAISE TAXES ON ANYBODY.

"Socialism" is taxation and redistribution of wealth. It's ignorant to assert that it's not socialism if you're only raising taxes on the upper middle class and the wealthy. And EVERYONE who works pays a Social Security tax. WE'VE BEEN A SOCIALIST COUNTRY FOR GENERATIONS! What's new.

GREAT POINT, down4life! Republicans are furious. We need them, we need Democrats, we need Libertarians, Constitutionists, Greens, WE NEED EVERYONE on the side of human liberty if we want to make real change. Thank God that Republicans are finally really pissed off! As long as the fascists in government are assaulting someone, that someone is a potential ally in our fight for freedom.

Socialism refers to a broad set of economic theories of social organization advocating public or state ownership and administration of the means of production and distribution of goods, and a society characterized by equality for all individuals, with a fair or egalitarian method of compensation. This is exactly what is going on right now in America. The successful are being punished for being successful. Instead of complaining that you don't make enough money you need to get your ass off the couch and go out and make that money yourself!
The top 10% of income earners in America already pay 68% of the taxes. That doesn't seem right to me. Personally I think everyone needs to pay a flat tax but that is a discussion for a different day.

to me, the socialism looming is the governments attempt to nationalize banks and large corporations instead of letting capitalism fail on its own. they are printing money at an alarming rate that isnt backed by anything. they try to make it look like they are taxing the rich, yet this incredible debt is being passed down to our children. THEY are the ones who will be hit the hardest, not the top 2%. their system is failing, and i fear that when it has almost completely crumbled and the depression is at its worst, they will institute a plan to "downsize" the population. choosing who will be and who will not be. guns and ammo have been FLYING off the shelves. tent cities are springing up everywhere. if this were a book you were reading, how would you see it ending?
